In this review, the author makes a large mallet of wood with his own hands. Although it would be more correct to call this homemade wooden hammer.
The author uses hardwood logs as the main material. It is desirable that it be dry.
If the wood is raw, then over time it can simply crack, which is extremely undesirable.
First of all, the author removes the bark with a staple from the log and cuts it to size. Then in the center of the workpiece you need to drill a through hole.
The main stages of work
At the next stage, the author makes two crimp hoops of the desired diameter from a metal strip.
The author makes hoops by hot forging metal. But they can also be made "cold" using a shinogib. How to make such a machine, read in this review.
Then weld the edges of the hoops to make closed rings. We put them on a log on both sides.
After that, the author splits a long log into pieces, and from one of the parts makes a handle for a mallet. At the top of the wooden handle you need to make a cut.
Then insert the handle into the hole in the striker and wedge it with a wooden wedge.
At the last stage, we grind the finished product and cover it with mineral oil (impregnation for wood).
